Will Blizzard be forced to drag it onto the BR battlefield, or can they remain content simply owning the entire hero shooter space with everyone else duking it out in a new genre? Now, Fortnite fully occupies that role instead. Yes, Fortnite is siphoning players from all other games, but I remember when Overwatch was the easy-to-pick-up-and-play shooter with fun, colorful characters and an endless supply of memes. I don’t think Overwatch is at a crisis point just yet, but Fortnite does seem to be sucking all the oxygen out of the room to a certain extent. It’s harder to see a Warcraft, Diablo or Starcraft themed battle royale entry, but who knows.īut it’s anyone’s guess when Blizzard’s BR entry will actually arrive, and when it does, if that will amplify Overwatch’s acceleration into irrelevance. My guess would be either a mode found within Overwatch, similar to the hero-based system of Realm Royale, or an entirely new game using Overwatch IP, but separate from the main game itself. This may have echoes of the Heroes of the Storm situation, where even though the MOBA genre was taken from Warcraft mods, Blizzard was incredibly slow to draft their own version, and when they finally did, they were years behind their competition, and never caught up.īlizzard has commented already that they’re “aware” of the battle royale frenzy, which implies they are probably working on their own entry. Whatever happens with battle royale now, Blizzard is going to have to play the position of a follower, not a leader, which is something we don’t often see from them. For Blizzard titles which becomes industry staples for years and years or even decades, that may be slightly worrying. That we have already seen the peak of that game just over two years since its official launch. The game is still fundamentally fun, and pops up in the news whenever a new character is released (most recently, a giant hamster).Īnd yet part of me does get the general sense that Overwatch’s moment may have passed. The community still seems active, its esports side is one of the most professionally produced in the industry. I’m not going to say Overwatch is failing all of a sudden, as there are no known figures to support that. Its impact on pop culture has been, and continues to be, immense. Fortnite is a global phenomenon on a scale like almost nothing I’ve ever seen in the industry, with players doing dances from the game after scoring goals in the World Cup finals. PUBG has its problems, but it is one of the best-selling games in history at this point. No one is even attempting to make hero shooters anymore, as battle royale has become the new goldmine barely a year and a half after hero shooters seemed like the next type of game that would dominate the next half-decade or so.įortnite and PUBG seem to be settling into a League of Legends/DOTA, #1/#2 situation where it will be hard for anyone else to touch them.

With 26,000 reputation and at level 50, players can find Hecta Garcia inside the Restless Shore to begin the Trial of the Destroyer quest. Unlike the previous quest, this one simply requires players to kill enemies inside Weaver's Fen. After arriving in Weaver's Fen and speaking to Commander Bergeron, players can tackle the Tier 3 quest so long as they've hit level 40 and have 11,000 reputation.
